Radio Announcer is not a career that I anticipated when I was a kid. I never really dreamt about talking for a living or really having anything to say that anybody would care to listen to. I always loved to be the class clown and do the stupid things that made people laugh but usually there were few words involved.
When I was a kid I had a speech impediment that would have automatically ruled out a career as a Radio Announcer. In fact it ruled me out of starting school on time. I couldn't say 'G' sounds, instead of 'G' I substituted it with a 'D' sound. Instead of of 'gate' I would say 'date'; instead of 'good' I would say 'dood'; instead of 'gynacologist' I would say...well you get the picture, I couldn't say my 'G' sounds.
The best that I can remember of the story my aunty gave mum advice to look into speech therapy and I started school a year later than I should have. I did a year of speech therapy and was a year older than all the other kids in my class.
I can't remember much of this whole situation but I do remember all of the storiesof how shy I was. When you see a young boy having started school late because he had to go through speech therapy and then ended up so shy he was hesitant to speak in public you don't think, "there is a kid destined to be a Radio Announcer."
Yet here I am public speaking, preaching, Radio Announcing, using my voice and words to entertain, inform, teach, inspire. You see no matter what difficulties life throws our way, life can't write the script of our life. Our parents, people who abuse us in different ways, our teachers, friends, bosses can't write the script of our life for us.
You have control of your life and control of your dreams. Todays troubles could be tomorrows success and passion. I have never loved any job more than radio but if I had let the start to my life control everything I never would have experienced the thing that I am passionate about today. |
