What better way to spend an overcast, drizzly day than to drive to Geelong!  Ok, so the timing wasn’t exactly perfect, but it was the plan that we had for the day.

So, we bundled up little Tyson, Luke jumped behind the wheel and we headed out west to Geelong for the day.

We had a great run out, particularly enjoying our trip over the Westgate Bridge.

Once we arrived at Geelong, we were without a plan.  Didn’t know where we were going to or what we wanted to see, so we just started driving around.

Luke had recently been in touch with the Performing Arts Centre in Geelong, so after taking a little drive, we decided to take a look there first.  Tyson had just fallen asleep, so Luke got out of the car and headed inside.  The plan was that when he returned, I’d go in, but when he returned, he was shaking from the cold.  With no real thought necessary, I thought better of it and stayed in the car!

With that, we continued on our drive.  We made our way to the waterfront to see what sights were on offer at Geelong’s beachfront.

As we drove along, I thought I saw a marching band, but didn’t get a chance to take a second look.  A bit further along, and there before us were what are known as the Baywalk Bollards.  These are larger than life-sized wood-carved artworks depicting local history and identities.  Suddenly, I was questioning if I’d actually seen a marching band.  Yes, as we drove past again, it was a band of bollards.  On a drizzly day where there is little to be done but drive by the waterfront, the Baywalk Bollards certainly livened up the trip.

As much as I loved seeing the Bollards, my favourite part of the waterfront was the Carousel Pavilion.  This is a stunning glass building housing an absolutely beautiful carousel.  This carousel is steam-driven, having been created in 1892.

Further along the road, after passing the pier and waterfront campus of Deaking Uni, we came across some stunning old homes and a fabulous park.  Had it not been such a wet day, it would have been a wonderful place to stop for a picnic and give Tyson a good run around.  It seemed to have anything a child could want in a park and more.

Before leaving, we had to quench the thirst of the driving man beside me.  He is a sport-lover and so the best place to take him was Skilled Stadium.  Again, with the wet, it ended up being a drive around Skilled Stadium rather than a closer look, but it still scratched an itch for him to be able to see it in the flesh.

It was disappointing to not get out and have a good walk around.  Nonetheless, I am a woman who loves to go for drives just to look at the scenery.  So, all in all, this was a wonderful new adventure for me.  I loved seeing the sites that Geelong has to offer.  My report is that it is a stunning city with everything you could want: family activities, beautiful surrounds and a solid sporting culture, all within walking distance from the water.

I’m convinced - it would be worth another visit on a sunny day!
